You are going about things the wrong way. These
writing groups constantly get messages from people
who say, in so many words, "To see some great
writing, go to www (whatever)" Frankly, that
just isn't good enough to attract the intelligent
readers of any of these groups, although you
might lure two or three of the other sort. In effect,
you are doing no more than saying, "I just paid
Vanity Press to have my new book published.
I am sure you will want to read it." People with
a sincere desire to interest newsgroup readers
in a work should post a selection from the work
as a thoughtful way of attracting readers. If
readers find the selection interesting, they will
visit the site. Otherwise, you are basically
wasting your time.
There is there is so much writing offered on
the net these days that if people spent even
two minutes on pitches such as yours, they
would be using up a very large of their net
time on sites that offer poor or amateurish
writing.
Yours may not fall into that category, true.
Even so, I am not the only one who has come
to realize that in the same way that most people
resent being cheated out of a quarter as much
as being cheated out of ten dollars, so do most
people also dislike being cheated out of a minute
of their time here, and two or three minutes there,
by self-proclaimed writers doing no more than
posting a URL and a sentence or two promising
interesting writing that is not found on the touted
site..
