You are full of beans up to your eyebrows, okla. You
don't seem to grasp anything about Usenet performance
art. Do you use Outlook Express? If you do, all you have
to do it go to any of those groups where the forgeries are
showing, such as misc.writing and alt.writing. If you
do that, you will see that under many current threads,
lots of "Bill Palmer" posts are showing. Yes, of course,
my readers and fans can READ the messages, and
instantly see which are mine and which are the forgers.
For that, you don't need any digital signature, because
my forger is a terrible writer--that's why he is forging
the name of a famous one, of course. But the point
is, people have to read the posts. They CAN"T
tell which is which simply by looking at all the
"Bill Palmer"'s on a thread.
As a result, some people will click on a couple of forgeries
by mistake, get disgusted, and stop reading all the posts
under the name "Bill Palmer." And that's a horrible thing,
because it means the forger will have won.
Okay, do you get it now, Okal? The problem is not
from people being unable to distinguish who is the real
palmer when they read the posts, but the problem
is that people reading names under the threads
in their newsreader can't tell which is which. Now,
since you are not a famous Usenet performance
artist, perhaps that would not bother YOU. But
it definitely bothers me, and commonsense tells
me it may be costing me readers. There is really
a sort of vandalism involved in what the forger is
doing. He is fantasizing that he is me, and he
is acting on his fantasies to the extent of interferring
with my performance art. It is no joke. Far from it.
accept no cheap imitations:
the alt.genius.bill-palmer
--firing posts at random from a window in an office
upstairs from rec.arts.prose
